A Chilling Marriage Story

Once there was a woman named Lily who was from Shanghai, China. You couldn't say that she's beautiful, but one thing clear was that she's smart, capable and also nice. She used to work in a foreign company and earn a pretty good salary. She met her boyfriend, well, let's just call him Roger, who became her husband later, on a conference meeting held by the company. They had such a great conversation and changed their phone numbers and Email addresses. They made a deal to correspond with each other since then.

That's how their relationship began. The guy was from France, a country full of romantic love stories. They communicated via Emails and phone calls, which made them fall in love with each other rapidly. Then Lily flew to France to see her loved one, knowing that Roger had to look after his ill father, which made it impossible for Roger to come to China. They had a wonderful time together and made the decision to get married. Roger introduced Lily to his mother. Most people from other countries probably got the thought that Chinese people, especially Chinese women were traditional, conservative and also family-oriented. Seeing that Lily was so happy with the housework, Roger's mother accepted Lily as her daughter-in-law. Soon Roger resigned his job and came to china. Lily was so moved to see that her man sacrificed himself in such a selfless way. Then they happily got married in Shanghai, which seemed to make a happy ending of this story. Well, if that's what you're thinking, you're totally wrong.

Lily and Roger had a hardship because Roger had been unemployed since he had come to China. They lived on Lily's salary to get by while Roger was unemployed. Lily did her best to help her husband. She used all her interpersonal relationships in order that her husband could get a job. Finally, after attempting for several months, Roger got a brilliant job offer with Lily's help. The salary was about 20,000 RMB per month. It seemed that things were getting better, although these two people sometimes quarreled with each other over some insignificant things.

Then Lily got pregnant and soon gave birth to a baby and the new born baby seemed to change Lily's life forever. Lily was more than 30 years old at that time, which made the delivery more difficult. They chose to accept the Caesarian operation. While his wife was still in the operating theater, Roger was told that he should pay extra money for the catgut suture because it was not included in the medical insurance. Then an everlasting nightmare started from here.

When Lily came back with the newborn baby to their lovely home, Roger, her husband, wanted the catgut suture fee back, which was totally out of Lily's expectation. She had never imagined that her husband would do such a thing to her. They were having a baby, which meant they had to make efforts together to support the family. Now she couldn't believe that a guy who earned more than 20,000 RMB a month didn't want to pay the operation fee (1000 RMB) for his wife who had just had a Caesarian operation. Lily's heart was broken. From Lily's point of view, Roger was totally different from what he used to be from that time. However, her husband didn't seem to realize that and kept asking her for the money. Then things were getting worse and worse. Roger preferred to spent money on socializing with his friends or buying some luxury goods rather than on his wife and child; he preferred to hang out at pubs rather than stay at home. Lily had to look after the baby all by herself.

Looking after newborn child is a very exhausting work. For Lily hadn't recovered from the operation, she wanted her mother to come over and take care of the baby. However, this advice was rejected by her husband. The reason was that the family should only have three people--Lily, Roger and the baby. Considering the culture differences, Lily accepted the decision of her husband and started to look after the baby. Meanwhile, Lily's mother-in-law changed the attitude to her. There're a lot of details that I'm not gonna describe here, or else, it is going to be too long. In a word, one thing led to another. Lily felt that she was being treated like a landlady more and more. She chose to bear the situation as long as her baby could have a complete family.

Then, unfortunately, Lily found out that Roger was having an affair with his ex-girlfriend. What made it even worse was that Lily was badly beaten several times by her husband for her so-called wrong doings. Now it's not about culture shock, it's not about differences. Lily didn't know what kind of things could make a guy like that.

Finally, here is the end of the story. One day, Lily told her husband that she was going to take the baby outside with her father, which made Roger angry. This time, Lily didn't listen to her husband and took the child with her to see her father. When they came back, Roger unexpectedly locked the door and didn't allow them in. Lily and the child were locked outside whole night and they had to spend the night at her parents’ apartment. Lily said, her child never called Roger "Daddy" again since then and he even didn't want to talk about him. Then Roger moved out of their home and took all valuables things away with him, he rejected all Lily's phonecalls. After one year, they finally got divorced and the court had to force Roger to pay the solarium to raise the child.

I heard this story from an interview and I think this story will make many people outrageous. However, I'm not denying French people. I truly believe that most people are good and honest.
